This library has undergone a recent renovation and now has almost 50,000 Watts of PV and over 50 Solar Thermal collectors installed on the roof! Details can be found at http://www.pldminfo.org/branches_hours/franklin.html. I strongly encourage our members from the area to support our work in your part of the state!

Howdy Members!  With 2012 just starting to pick up speed we are struggling to figure out how to meet the needs of Iowans that are hungry for Renewable Energy guidance. We have come to an inescapable conclusion,
We need your help!  If you can help with letters to the editor, newsletter layout, event staffing, organizing Expo or events in your community please give Steve a call in the office (319-338-1076) to let him know what you can do or drop him an email at steve@irenew.org

Our good friends at the Iowa Environmental Council do an outstanding job monitoring proposed legislation. I strongly encourage you to sign up for their action alerts. http://iaenvironment.e-actionmax.com/default.asp

There are a couple of events coming up that you need to know about,

February 22, 2012 Environmental Lobby Day will be held at the Iowa State Capitol from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
During that time, you’ll be able to visit with representatives from a number of our member organizations who will have displays set up in the Capitol rotunda, and you’ll be able to tell your elected officials why the health of our natural environment matters to you.

And if you join us at 10:30 a.m., you’ll be able to see a short press conference where we’ll share some of the Council’s priorities for this year’s legislative session.  Specifically, we will seek that:

    • The State will utilize its ample cash reserves to fund important priorities at the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship.
    • Critical conservation programs, such as Iowa’s Resource Enhancement and Protection program (REAP) should receive the funding they need to carry forward Iowa’s conservation priorities until funding is available for the Iowa Outdoor Resources and Natural Recreation Trust Fund voters created in 2010.  (For REAP, this means finally providing full funding, or $20 million this year.)
    • Iowa should set forward-thinking, realistic goals for creating a renewable energy future in Iowa that prioritizes our development of wind and solar energy while avoiding other energy policy that distracts from these opportunities, such as the nuclear power plant bill which resurfaced this session.

Saturday, February 25th, 10am-4pm, The Cedar Rapids Mini Maker Faire is coming!
Science Station Education Center, Lindale Mall to share your Maker projects. We currently have 43 Makers who have expressed interest in participating!   go to makerfairecedarrapids.com  for more information.
